This projectcs supported by UNDP (as implemented by Eco-Vital and UNDP between 2021-2022 as part of "Supporting Recovery and Stability Through Local Development in Iraq". This project supported climate change mitigation measures by acting locally here in Erbil city by eradicating plastic use at bakeries through collective action by working with government, Syndicate, volunteers and the private sector.
The project targeted 500 local bakeries that distribute thousands of disposable plastic bags on daily basis. We supplied sustainable paper bags (2000) each whilst simultaneously educating the public through awareness campaigns via print (100 posters), radio messaging, social media (including Facebook, Twitter, websites), and through a final advocacy workshop organized at the end of the project to consolidate the efforts and take the opportunity for a political buy in to banning plastic bag use at bakeries in Erbil with the ultimate aim in the wider region. While, the government declared the ban, it is so far under study. All in all, one million single use plastic bags were averted from use.
This project was supported through Guan Eden -Goethe Institute and funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and implemented in September and October 2020. Eco-Vital was awarded to implement school environmental awareness activities through art. Six schools in Erbil were selected in coordination with the Ministry of Education (MoE). The project raised awareness of at least 500 students, teachers and people through discussions and school environmental wall art.
